Colville Chautauqua Week Features Many Entertainers

The Colville chautauqua opened with Staples and company performing ventriloquism sleight of hand and landscape painting. Albert L Blair spoke on The Whir of the Newspaper Press. Haseltine opera singers, Bill Bone, Maids O Dundee, Maurice Drew players, Solomon Ramalingam, and Loseff's Russian Orchestra scheduled through Sunday with strong attendance.

Bids for Building Church Rejected by Board

Opening of bids for the new Congregational church building Monday evening failed to produce any contracts as bids proved prohibitive. The lowest offer was 18 000 dollars and another bid over 22 000, nearly double the 12 000 to 14 000 dollar estimate. The board postponed the contract and considered day work with separate contracts for cement and plastering.

Grange stockholders meet for picnic at Colville site

Fifty Grange store stockholders gathered at Mill Creek Colville for a picnic with Meyers Falls attendees and A S Goss state manager speaking on Cooperation. Gordon of Colville store offered a store review as ore shipments from Gladstone near Northport to the Kellogg smelter yielded 78 percent lead and more than $2000 per carload. The company owns 17 claims.

Joint Celebration at Marcus July 4

The Marcus celebration opens July 2 with Colville and Spokane groups attending. A smoker and dance raise funds split 50 50 with Colville band performing through the four day run. Bucking contests prizes 250 dollars and varied amusements stretch from July 2 to 5 with races, roping, tepee games, and Indian exhibits.

Caterpillar Sightings East of Town Prompt Action

A woodland tent caterpillar has been found east of the city affecting trees and lawns. Experts at Washington State College recommend control by burning clusters with a kerosene torch or applying arsenate of lead at double standard orchard rates. Experts advise a wide flare funnel around the torch to catch falling caterpillars.

Colville Ball Team Defeats Chewelah In Tight 7 5 Victory

The Colville nine beat Chewelah 7 to 5 in a fast, late showdown to run their season wins to eight of nine. Hydorn and Moss shared pitching duties as Hydorn hit a batter and contributed strong hits, while Moss left with a cramp and Rogers had a long drive for Colville. The crowd filled but bleachers were not full as Colville plans a rematch at Chewelah next Sunday.

The Williams home at Elm and Astor is being stuccoed by S. D. Henley of Spokane using Imperial Magnesite stucco. The two tone brown and white upper with black and white lower finish stands as Stevens county's first Henley stucco project.
