Colville leaders report district results incomplete with some quotas unmet while others exceed. Workers note the challenge is securing gifts that reflect maximum individual ability, highlighting gaps for widows and pensioners and urging larger per capita contributions to push the county over the top.
A compiled list shows individual donations for War Savings Stamps since July 2. Names include Ole Anderson with 50, M C Bunge 25, L Baker 120, William R Baird 20, C C Campbell 50, Mrs M Chamberlain 50, Carl Flugel 100, Mrs Louise Flugel 100, Dan Fallon 30, W B Hewes 100, Mrs W B Hewes 100, Mrs H P Jarchow 200, Lillian Leonard 25, Linda Mead 20, A T Sutton 60, J F Singer 30, D K Zuck 100, and Mrs Helen Zuck 100.
Velma and Kendall Hackett and two young siblings narrowly escaped injury when a hay barn collapsed during a wind dust storm south of Colville. A board struck Martha Hagen and Kendall Hackett incurred knee bruises, while the baby was saved by a widow eight inches from a timber.
A dust obscured crossing south of Chewelah caused a wagon drawn by four horses to be struck by a fast northbound train. Charles Komar and Ebert Lockhead died instantly. Harrison Cox survived after leaving the wagon to drink water. An inquest in Chewelah reported conflicting whistle testimony and did not assign blame.
The Colville band under Prof Edwin Wetmore and many Colville residents joined the Inchelium event Saturday. Inchelium beat Colville 8 7 in a closely watched game umpired by L B Donley who halted a fast ball. Spectators photographed the Indians in traditional dress and enjoyed the Indian Wallux game and pavilion dancing.
