A brief verse fragment reflecting on soldiers and sailors defending rights and liberty. It contrasts the soldier maintaining convicts for our rights with the sailor at sea, urging rise and triumph in battle as at Waterloo.
In this Charleston Mercury letter dated Sept 23 from Pine Mountain Meriwether Co Ga Gen James Hamilton declines party activity and affirms a frank appraisal of Gen Cass. He praises Cass for talents and public service, notes personal diplomacy with France and Texas, and argues Cass would not injure Southern interests though he remains neutral in the contest. He warns against misinterpretation of his views as partisan.
In a lengthy 1848 letter, J Hamilton defends Gen. Taylor as a candidate of the country not party, urges unity for South Carolina, and warns against disunion while denouncing party factions, urging fidelity to constitutional compromises and noting his loyalty to his home state. He laments sectional discord and calls for steady leadership amid the Mexican War debates.
