New Orleans Chamber Recommends Cotton Year Change

The New Orleans Chamber of Commerce circulates to cotton exporting state chambers a proposal to shift the annual cotton statement date from October 1 to August 21. The change aims to keep year-to-year crop accounts distinct and is expected to be adopted by the New Orleans Price Currents and likely followed nationwide, per the Mobile Journal.

Alabama Tobacco Marks First Cherokee County Harvest

A hogshead of tobacco from Cherokee county was sent to our market on Saturday, consigned to Broadnax Newton and Haynes. It is the first Alabama grown tobacco ever brought to this market. The soil and climate of Cherokee are well suited to tobacco, and it may soon become a major agricultural product of the state.

Savannah to Macon Rail Line Near Completion

The Savannah to Macon Railroad should soon be nearly fully restored and expanded. Current service reaches 80 miles from Savannah, with plans to extend to 135 miles and approach Macon within 60 miles. Grading continues to Oconee and embankments between the Ocmulgee and Oconee rivers progress rapidly, targeting full line use in about 18 months.

Important Decisions Across Supreme Court and Local Courts

The Cincinnati Enquirer notes the Supreme Court will decide certifi cates of deposit and similar devices that dodge bank paper laws are illegal under the 1816 statute. It mentions the State v Ohio Life Insurance Co and Miami Exporting Co cases awaiting Bank decision. Philadelphia judges rule in Croft v Reilly that a bearer check loaned for accommodation and passed to a third party to pay a bona fide debt cannot be recovered.
