The Times notes the new Post-Office Law goes into operation on July 1 1845. Postmasters may not send subscriptions free of postage. Subscribers in arrears are urged to remit through their postmasters before the first of next month.
A note received by the post in Tuscaloosa June 12 1945 reports General Andrew Jackson dying at the Hermitage at 6 p.m. on Sunday the 8th with funeral on the 10th at 1 p.m. Jonas J Bell signs the message expressing confidence in his resting in a better world. The piece notes belief in the national bereavement and awaits the next mail with anxiety.
The paper promotes Mr. Jerry Cowles and assistant John Jones as reliable managers of Macon’s only Fire roof Warehouse with capacity for 12 to 14 thousand bales under cover. Notices also mention cemetery lots for sale, a cotton bloom, hot weather updates, and a lengthy feature praising Warm Springs as a summer retreat near Columbus.
The Columbus Guards under Capt P T Schley plan a Saturday march to Hamilton and Sulphur Springs, with their sixteen man brass band led by Sergt Bernreiter of the US Regimental Band. A civic reception at White Sulphur Springs in Meriwether County is proposed, with a Military Ball on the 30th. letters of invitation between Capt Schley and Walker Duncan detail arrangements and dates.
The Constitutionalist announces it has passed into new bonds with James Gagpxsr Jr, Esq as editor and preacher. The piece praises his anticipated bold advocacy, urbanity, and courtesy, and notes the move strengthens the paper’s authority and influence.
