The Maine senator Fairfield died Friday night at 8 o clock after years of severe heart palpitations and related health issues, shocking readers near and far.
The Postmaster General reports that the Richmond Railroad refused to carry the mail after December 10 unless paid 260 dollars per mile annually. Johnson says he offered 23.50 per mile for daily service and would allow continued service without contract to let the company seek legal changes, but the Presidents rejected. Service on this road is once daily. New York route twice daily averaging 159 dollars per mile annually. New York to Boston and Albany to Buffalo pay under 100 dollars per mile. If these facts hold, censure of the Postmaster General should fall on the road’s President and Directors for seeking exorbitant pricing.
