Cotton Crop of 1847 Estimated at About Two Million Bales
The Charleston Mercury cites a New York Herald letter from Madison County Mississippi estimating last year’s cotton crop near two million bales, while correcting overoptimistic port receipts and noting Georgia, South Carolina, and most of our state run at least one third below last year. Planters by and large hesitate to move cotton to market, fearing still shorter yields despite potential higher prices. Local estimates place Mississippi and Alabama crops down as much as 50 percent from prior season. port receipts are projected with caution.
