A French paper recounts a dramatic Gibraltar case and a killer’s confession

A letter from Gibraltar claims James Boxwell, a wealthy British merchant, was convicted of murdering his daughter on circumstantial evidence. On the way to execution, John Keats allegedly confessed to kidnapping and harming the girl to claim the pardon. The crowd learned the supposed killer died of terror as the rope slackened. Keats was then kept in custody amid public outrage. The tale includes Paris pickpocket feats and a note on John C. Calhoun’s 58th birthday in Charleston.
