Improvement in area labor picture in Columbus region
In Boone Butler Colfax Platte and Polk Counties the Columbus Job Service area shows mixed gains. As of Sept 1 the Columbus labor supply, though double last year, was 15 percent down from August. Of 763 registered, 421 were female and 140 were 45 or older. Temporary layoff claims fell to 435, 78 students sought part time work, and 67 more placements than last year. There were 319 unfilled openings including salespersons and mechanics. Detasseling gave over 1000 youth temporary work, veteran applicants dropped to 64, with two veterans in August.

Snappy Meeting Occupies Short Columbus Council Session
The Columbus City Council held a 90 minute meeting with general business discussed. A 4-3 vote approved a letter of appreciation for Lonnie Anderson, a former policeman who served from 1985 to 1975, and retiring firefighter Richard L. Bond received an appreciation and a pay raise. Council members debated meeting lengths and suggested sending agenda items to committees.

UPI reports first quarter profits for manufacturers surged 44 percent to 9.3 billion, then rose to 12.5 billion as the economy recovers from a long decline. Gains centered in rubber, glass, and textiles while auto profits lagged. Job gains followed plant furloughs. unemployment claims fell, private payrolls rose, and personal income climbed. Housing data showed slower starts and rising mortgage rates, with mixed home price trends.

Nebraska Weather: Cool Readings and Varied Highs Across State
A brisk northwesterly flow kept temperatures cool across Nebraska with partly cloudy skies and scattered showers. Readings ranged from the 40s in western areas to around 70 in the southeast, with Alliance among the chilliest at 44 and Imperial to Metook hitting highs near the 70s on Wednesday. The forecast calls for decreasing clouds and possible light frost in the northwest tonight, then partly cloudy western skies and a warming trend eastward by Friday.

Shallenberg and Jansen Promoted by Congas at Norfolk and Sioux Falls
Don Tr. Shallenberg becomes Northeastern District manager in Norfolk while Merle E. Jansen advances to State Manager for Congas 28 000 customer operation based in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Jansen, a Madison native, began in Norfolk in 1951 and rose through service and managerial posts in Lincoln Columbus and Norfolk before returning in 1969 as district manager. The Jansens plan to move to 4201 Birchwood Street Sioux Falls after Nov. 1 with their two children. Shallenberg, a 18 year veteran with Congas, has held posts in York Fairmont and Plattsmouth and is active in local civic groups. he and wife Mary Ann have three sons. The promotions take effect Nov 1.
