Ann McGovern Mead, oldest daughter of Democratic nominee George McGovern, will campaign for her father in Nebraska on September 25 and 26. The bodies of Bradley Anderson and Jerome John O'Conner, both 18, were found in a wrecked car near Sibley Iowa. Osceola County deputies identified them after the vehicle left Highway 9, two miles east of the Highway 9 8 junction, overturning into a ditch and a blind pit. High School students located the car Wednesday.

The Platte County Board of Supervisors met in session with Chairman Carl Aerni and County Clerk Carl Hoge. They approved hiring two additional deputy sheriffs funded up to seventy-five percent by federal funds and authorized the Sheriff to apply for the grant.
State Sen. Clifton Batchelder of Omaha, seeking election to the State Board of Regents, says the University of Nebraska budget has padding that would yield a 19 percent taxpayer increase after cuts. He notes the administration asked for a 2 percent rise and accuses it of using inflation to justify higher funding to avoid accreditation risks.
Officials in Lincoln weighed creating an independent vocational-technical education system to compete with Nebraska’s existing 1974 community college framework. Federal funds might instead bolster the current system, with a Denver EDA team reviewing brick and mortar needs for a 23 county plan. Schleiger noted no recommendation yet but said the state’s efficient operation should be emphasized to avoid duplicating funds.
Eileen Fagan, 17, got her hand caught in a two-sectioned wall safe at a drive-in where she works. Firefighters used a jack hammer after three hours to free her hand, then she was taken to a hospital overnight for observation.
