Two Rhode Island Men Sentenced in Platte County Case

Two Rhode Island men, Keith Allen Sullivan and Lawrence Wayne Fontaine, were sentenced to two to four years after pleading guilty to assault and jail escape. Sullivan received credit for 97 days in custody. Fontaine had 9 days prior to sentencing. The crime originated from an assault and robbery aboard a Union Pacific freight train near Columbus, with both men escaping jail during the wait for trial and recaptured hours later northwest of Lown.

Interim peace pact signed amid Soviet boycott

Rain showers soak southeast Nebraska with heavy totals

United Press International reports substantial rainfall across parts of Nebraska, especially the southeast, with Stella totaling 1.60 inches and Auburn 1.98 inches. Firth 1.73 and Fall City 2.64 inches, while most other areas recorded 0.25 to 0.75 inch. Showers linger tonight in the southeast before clearing Friday.

Bank hostage drama ends with surrender in Albany

A robbery suspect who held nine hostages for over 47 hours in Albany, Wyoming surrendered after police talked him into it. Robert M. Resne Jr., 24, of Washington, D.C., will face charges of robbery, assault and unlawful imprisonment. One hostage released with high blood pressure. others unharmed.

City Council Sets Dumping Times and Rates Near Duncan

Columbus City Counciltightened waste policy with a closure plan for the old Jandel site and a new dump northwest of Duncan. Auto and itemized hauler rates were set for both dumps with hours Monday through Saturday and a Sept price for rubble and trees. Haulers protested cost shifts, prompting a wait-and-see approach after a one month hauling period.

Slayton to Return to Work After Benign Lung Tumor

Houston report says astronaut Donald Deke Slayton will resume duties at NASA within days after leaving Memorial Hospital nine days post surgery for a small benign lung tumor. He is noted as America's oldest space pilot.
