The U S unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent in August the highest since December with 7.5 million unemployed. Teenagers faced a sharp rise in joblessness while overall employment increased as the labor force grew from July to August.
Carter accused the Ford administration of lacking a future plan as unemployment figures rise and Dole warned of a $100 billion tax cost if Carter wins. Ford sought unity with Dole and Reagan support while Gallup placed Carter ahead 52 to 37 nationwide.

Columbus Police arrested 18 year old Larry D. Cordsen at 12 28 a m on burglary of Bernecki Mobil Station at 11th Street and 24th Avenue. Cordsen was apprehended at the service station by Officer Jay Salak while investigating a rear entry break in.
Lincoln Nebraska State Fair kicks off with smooth operations and organized staff led by Henry Brandt.
