Nebraska voters weigh reform of merit system for judges

The Oct 26 1972 Telegram reports Nebraska’s merit plan for selecting judges could be revised by constitutional amendment No 12. It would expand commissions from seven to nine, limit party influence, remove the supreme court chief’s voting power, require public candidate names, and demand roll call votes. Lakeview High Holds Nov 1 2 Parent Teacher Conferences

Lakeview High School will host parent teacher conferences all day November 1 and 2 with no student classes. About 20 parent groups are scheduled each hour from morning until 3 30 PM. Student Council members assist and direct parents to teachers. Parents not receiving letters are urged to contact the school office before November 4.

Signals Installed At Union Pacific Crossings Near Columbus

Flashing light signals are in operation at Union Pacific Railroad crossings on two country roads east of Columbus. One crossing lies between Sections 23 and 2, the other between Sections 22 and 29. Installation was supervised by the Nebraska Department of Roads with costs funded 65 percent by Nebraska, 30 percent by Columbus, and 2 percent by Union Pacific, which also handles maintenance. James Abbott McNeill Whistler is noted for adopting the butterfly symbol to sign his nature paintings.

Local junior high orchestra to attend Saturday clinic

Columbus City schools will send about 100 junior high orchestra pupils from Columbus Norfolk and Fremont to a Saturday music clinic at Norfolk High School. Rehearsal begins at 9:30 a.m. with a 7:00 p.m. public concert in the gym. Dr. Louis Tracinski of the University of Nebraska will guest conduct. Concert numbers include Par sicaglia, Legend, Bratislava, Tirework Music, Maxis, and Siciliano and Allegro.
