The Labor Department reports a 0.4 percent rise in the CPI for September, matching April gains and signaling slower inflation. Food prices leveled off, contributing to the slowdown, while auto clothing and gas costs rose 0.4 percent and services up 0.5 percent.
Jimmy Carter said he would stop the Arab boycott of Israel if he wins the White House, calling the pledge legal and achievable. Ford dismissed it as naive, noting past presidents failed to halt the boycott. The two also sparred over ads and media coverage ahead of the Alfred E. Smith dinner and upcoming debates.
American author Saul Bellow won the 1976 Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm at age 61. The Swedish Academy cited his human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture. The United States achieved a clean sweep with Americans also winning Economics Chemistry Physics and Medicine prizes.
Eight landowners south of the Loup River sue the City of Columbus and Platte County in Platte County District Court alleging the Loup River dike depresses south bank property values and that compensation was inadequate. Plaintiffs include Marvin Champar and Olga Foral among others, represented by Fitzgerald Brown et al. The 5.2 mile dike, completed 14 months early in October 1972, cost 1.497 million dollars and was designed by the Corps of Engineers. No damages figure or hearing date is set.
Nebraska Agriculture and Environment Committee held a full day hearing at the Holiday Inn in Columbus led by Senator Loran Schmit. About a dozen Platte County residents testified among roughly 60 in attendance, focusing on SB 317 and 410 and Platte County planning, zoning, and subdivision timelines and possible county development plans by July 1, 1977.
The day expected cool with clear skies across Nebraska as a high pressure ridge extends from the Northern Rockies to the Gulf of Mexico. Overnight lows range from 18 at Alliance to 36 at Beatrice, with Wednesday highs 50 to 63 and Friday sunrise and sunset noted.
Lindsay Manufacturing will lease 2,000 square feet and reserve 5,000 more from the City of Columbus in a council approved deal. The space on the building at 14th Street and 25th Avenue will house admin offices and allow expansion with a Dec 1 to March 31, 1978 term and two one year renewals. Rates are 2 dollars per square foot per year with utilities paid for the reserve. The agreement includes rate renegotiation after March 31, 1979 and that reserve space can be withdrawn after Sept. 1, 1977, with Lindsay paying minimum water and sewer rates. Off-street parking is required and Lindsay bears all stairway costs. Mayor Gerber called it a long relationship for a desirable company.

The event aims to ease rivalries with academic ties through Spanish activities, songs, skits, and a shared lunch and entertainment, amid planned security costs of 2200 dollars for Friday’s game.
In Destrahan Louisiana a Mississippi River ferry collided with a tanker and sank. Twenty two bodies recovered with at least fifty six missing. The disaster could become the river’s worst since the Sultana tragedy of 1865.
