Grain sales pacts eyed to aid farmers and buyers
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz told a meeting of food editors that long term grain sales agreements with Russia, Japan and other countries will help farmers plan full scale production and benefit consumers. He warned that without export markets for large portions of wheat, soybeans, cotton and feed grains, farm output could shrink, harming nonfarm jobs and food prices. The talks aim to steady prices and avoid erratic buying by securing long range pacts with Japan and Russia.
