Veterans Day program planned here Thursday
A Veterans Day program is set for Thursday at 10 am in Scotus Central Catholic Memorial Hall. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3704, Hartman Post 84 American Legion, Pawnee Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, Scotus students and musical groups will participate with Bill Redrow as MC and Rev. Dean Uhling delivering the invocation and benediction. The color guard will retire the colors and taps will mark the WWI armistice memorial at 11 am. All veterans are invited to the American Legion Club for noon food and refreshments.

Smokey the Bear Dies After Long Fire Safety Era
Old Smokey the Bear, longtime symbol of forest fire prevention, died in his sleep at the National Zoo. The 70plus year old bear had been retired from official duties in 1975 and was live with Goldie, his mate, in retirement. Officials say his death was due to old age and his body would be flown to New Mexico for burial near Capitan, where he was found as a cub after a forest fire.
