Bacteria Produce Human Hormone Somatostatin For First Time
A UC San Francisco and City of Hope team, led by Dr. Herbert Boyer, transferred the somatostatin gene into E. coli, enabling the bacteria to synthesize the brain hormone. Stanford’s Dr. Paul Berg noted production yielded about five milligrams from 100 grams of culture, illustrating the transfer of human gene information to a bacterium.

Omaha seeks broad panel for status of women panel
More than 60 women expressed interest in joining a reorganized Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women in Omaha. Applicants include a school board member, housewives, insurance workers, teachers, an auto business operator, and a real estate broker. Forsberg said no appointments will be made soon as discussions slow. The previous panel dissolved after resignations and leaders withdrew amid a dispute over advisory versus independent powers. Veys will contact groups through January 1 to shape the commission’s form and duties and ensure a true cross section of Omaha women.

Brezhnev skips paragraphs in televised speech
Moscow reports Brezhnev inadvertently skipped two paragraphs during a nine minute address. Unofficial Soviet sources say the words urging a halt in nuclear weapons production and gradual stockpile reduction were intended for the record and would be carried by Tass. The full speech would stand for the record, officials say.
