Columbus men receive grain dryer patent

Marion E. Wurdeman and James A. Wurdeman, both of Columbus, Nebraska, were awarded U.S. patent no. 3,834,294 on September 10, 1974 for a grain dryer and aerator. The device improves on earlier grain drying tech, noting prior patents and the value of drying grain to prevent spoilage.

Wurdeman grain dryer patent improves usability

The Wurdeman group patent presents a grain dryer with a removable fan assembly attached to the tube end outside the bin. This lets the tube be inserted into the grain and turned easily, with the fan attached only after positioning. Farmers can use multiple tubes with fewer complete assemblies, cutting costs. Also noted are rising farm prices in October 1973 and cattle price declines to 30.50 per hundredweight.

Landowners urged to give attention to trees in Nebraska

Dan B. Laitz reports on the growing case for timber on farms in Nebraska. Forester Ellsworth H. Genson notes farmers overlook tree farming opportunities, as timber is a renewable long term investment with 30 to 50 years to sawlog. The Forestry Incentives program offers 75 percent cost sharing to plant or improve stands, targeting small timber producers, with limits of 2,500 dollars per landowner per year.
