CHS Student Council Awards Breakfast honors top students
More than 275 attendees at Columbus High School watched 14 organizations recognize over 100 students. Larryeuchter hosted, with Scott Oppliger and Chris Carter installed as officers. Honors included a national math test ranking, homemaking and science awards, and numerous music and yearbook distinctions. New officers and members were announced for the coming year.

Des Moines Protest Rallies For End Of War Amendment
About 3,000 people gathered at Veterans Auditorium and marched to the capitol grounds in Des Moines for a peace rally supporting the Amendment to End the War. Sen Harold Hughes spoke urging nonviolence and describing a timetable to withdraw troops by mid-1971 with a cut in Southeast Asia military spending.

Accidental shooting death in North Platte claims Rail worker
Lincoln County Attorney Walter Amullikin said John St Druery, 63, of North Platte died Saturday night when a shot from a gun fired while he was taking a shotpun from his car. Druery, a Union Pacific Railroad carman, is survived by his widow, mother, three daughters, seven brothers and two sisters.

Heat Wave Kills Over 190 in Northern India
News reports from the Press Trust of India and Sunday note that a severe heat wave across Northern India has claimed more than 190 lives in the last two weeks. Temperatures have reached as high as 119 degrees, and wells have dried up in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Three CWA Officers Ordered to Court over Banter Charges
District Judge Edmund Nuss of Hastings ordered K Gordon Harry B Smith and Darryl Malesker Local 7476 officers to appear in Adams County District Court to answer to Banter charges. Nuss alleged a temporal injunction against tampering with Kansas Nebraska Gas Co facilities was ignored and violated amid a broad five state strike seeking a nine cent hourly wage rise while the company offers sixty cents over three years.

President Joaquin Balaguer was re elected to a second four year term with more votes than the four rivals combined. Final unofficial totals show Balaguer with 685 705 votes from 504 196 cast for opponents. Vice President Francisco Agost Lora led the challengers with 240 55? votes while Gen. Elias Wessin received 153 591 votes.
