Legislature Kills Nebraska School Lands Sale Bill

The Nebraska Legislature defeated a bill that would have allowed only permissive sales of school lands. The 25 to 27 vote rejected R C Whitney's measure, backed by Beatrice’s Fred Carstens, who argued mandatory sales harm the state’s finances. Proponents cited mismanagement by the State Board of Educational Land and Funds and warned against preventing land sales, while opponents urged fixing the board rather than stripping its powers. Gov. Exon endorsed the bill before its defeat.
