The month ended with 4.61 inches of moisture in Columbus, the wettest since May 1871, exceeding normal April totals by more than two inches. Final 10 days produced 3.84 inches as cooler than normal temperatures persisted, while May began damply with 0.69 inches after midnight Sunday.
Seven people injured in a traffic collision on the Loup River Bridge during heavy rain Sunday night. Trooper Bob Meyer reported the crash occurred about 9 15 p m on the bridge south end. Injured include James Ganskow 26 of Columbus driver of a mouth bound cat treated for mouth injuries James Herout 32 Columbus driver of a mouth bound pickup with camper shell treated for cuts bruises possible rib injuries Sharon his wife severe face and scalp cuts their son him 10 and daughter Heth 3 bruises and cuts Jeff 6 treated and released with bruises daughter Lisa 8 head and neck injuries transferred to University Hospital in Omaha MIL were tested at Behlen Hospital.
The Nebraska Public Power District will station technical crews in four strategic areas Norfolk Ogallala Lincoln and a central Nebraska area to be named. Each location will start with a foreman and six men focused on substation maintenance and repair. A six member transmission crew will move to Lincoln for new construction and upkeep of transmission facilities. Completion expected by mid August.
Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce schedules a busy week with a noon Friday members luncheon at Elks Country Club to honor the Beblen family and debut Dr. Ron Conrad as president. An evening session and a Tuesday meeting in Trank Wallon cabin will introduce 100 plus new members with orientation and informal social hour.
The Nixon administration opposes broad changes to the federal income tax arguing the system is not unfair to single people or married couples. Assistant Treasury Secretary Exlwir S Cohen testified to Ways and Means about potential tweaks to the standard deduction and noted the 1969 changes narrowed the tax gap but left a 20 percent disparity in some cases.
Senator George McGovern opens a six day Nebraska tour to gain delegate support for the May 9 primary. He targets urban and farm Democrats, youth, and the elderly, with a cross state whistle stop from Omaha to Scottsbluff and a May 8 Lincoln benefit concert. Kathleen Kennedy will accompany him.

Washington AP reports the government removes wage and price controls for millions of small firms and 60 or fewer worker government units. The move excludes health and construction, expands Pay Board and Price Commission staff, and targets reducing red tape while boosting oversight on remaining regulated firms.
London AP reports sustained industrial demand lifting the free market price of gold above 50 dollars an ounce. Bullion dealers set the afternoon fixing at 60.20, up from 49.60, with gold mining and trading markets noting the rise stems from industrial demand and jewelry production rather than speculation.
NEW DELHI AP India and Pakistan announced Sunday that Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and President Mulfikar Ali Bhutto will meet in New Delhi late this month or early in June. Dhar Gandhi’s emissary returned to New Delhi after four days discussing arrangements for the talks.
Saigon AP reports Quang Tri province capital falls after five days of savage assaults by four North Vietnamese divisions. Hanoi claims its biggest victory of the day as South Vietnamese forces abandon the city, opening a path toward Hue and threatening central coast stability. Military actions include seizure of rice crops, highway 1 disruption north of Da Nang, and strategic withdrawals to defend Hue. Civilians fled earlier, leaving few behind in the evacuated area.
The National Weather Service warns of possible flooding after heavy rains. Forecasts show Ithaca on Wahoo Creek may reach 22 to 28 feet by 6 p.m. Monday, Ashland on Salt Creek 18 to 19 feet, and Louisville on the Platte River 7 to 14 feet by Tuesday. Civil Service Commission will hold July 6 written exams across Nebraska for youths seeking nominations to U.S. Air Force and other academies, with Curtis urging interested applicants to write.
