Doctor Behrhorst Helps Maya Indians In Guatemala Clinic
Dr. Carroll Behrhorst, a Kansas physician turned medical missionary, moved his family to Guatemala to establish a permanent clinic for the Cakchikels. He built a hospital and community programs funded by his own means, later supported by Peace Corps volunteers, AFSC workers, and medical students. The Behrhorst Clinic now serves over 30,000 patients, with Indian nurses trained on site and families contributing care and materials. He stresses dignity and self-respect, noting that understanding local thinking was key to effective aid.
