Smiths Ski and Bridge Family Reunion at Breckenridge

A Columbus family organized a 26 person Breckenridge Colorado ski and bridge tournament week. Harold Smith led planning with siblings and in laws from Columbus Omaha and New Jersey traveling by car in a five-vehicle caravan. Harold broke his leg on the first day, but the group continued with daily dinners and bridge contests begun in 1963.

Drought Could Lift Food Prices Next Year

UPI reports Agriculture Department economists warn of a potential 4 to 5 percent rise in consumer food prices this year and a possible 10 percent jump in 1978 if droughts persist. They note beef, pork and poultry output could fall while grain fed beef expands, and that drought impacts would slow meat supplies later.

Da Vinci mural found in Florence claim virtually certain

UPI reports a University of California team led by Travers Newton and Maurizio Seracini says they are virtually certain they located Leonardo da Vinci's lost Battle of Anghiari behind a Vasari wall in the Hall of the 500 at Florence's Palazzo Vecchio. Initial pigment tests suggest Leonardo era oil techniques.

Escapee from Nebraska Penal Complex Re detained in Newman Grove

Eugene Martens a 35 year old trustee at the Nebraska Penal Complex escaped Friday afternoon and was captured about eight hours later in Newman Grove. He apparently fled in a state vehicle and was found in Duncan before the arrest. Martens was in Madison County Jail serving one to three years for writing insufficient fund checks.

Columbus Senior High Band Plans Telethon Airings

The Columbus Senior High stage band directed by Larry Marik will perform at the Nebraska Easter Seal Telethon on Channel 6 this weekend. Host Peter Citron will join with saxophone during taped segments Saturday at 1 40 to 1 55 a m and 5 40 to 5 55 a m. The 23 member ensemble has won a jazz trophy this year and will participate in five contests or clinics this spring beyond home games and public shows.
