Mother calls escape by daughter from Norfolk tragedy miracle

The mother of Christy Graber recalls a miraculous escape after a 720 volt line fell on a car killing three Northeastern Nebraska College students. Christy crawled through a rear window to safety as the vehicle burned, while the prank sparked accident undid the insulator and caused the fatal current. Authorities investigated with Madison County Sheriff Tel Ray acting as coroner.

Easter Egg Hunt Slated by Columbus Optimists

Columbus Optimist Club sponsors an Easter Egg Hunt for children up to age 10 at Pawnee Park near the baseball diamond southwest of the football field. The event begins 9 am Saturday March 28 with two age groups and Easter baskets for eggs marked. Jerry Kneffel is project chairman.

Smoking measure heads to president for ban on cigarette ads

Congress has passed a bill banning all radio and television cigarette commercials starting January. President Nixon is expected to sign the measure into law. Senator Moss lauds the move and notes the tobacco industry spent 238.5 million on ads in 1968, predicting a long-term drop in cigarette use. The January 2 deadline gives tobacco firms a final New Year’s profits window.

Dennis Thiele Serves Aboard USS Virgo

Navy Seaman Dennis L. Thiele serves aboard the ammunition ship USS Virgo homeported in Concord California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence C. Thiele of Columbus. Bridge Club Albion hosted by Mrs. Richard Lawson met at her home. Prizes awarded to Mrs. John Cookston and Mrs. Gary Morgan. Next meeting set with Mrs. Morgan in April.

St Ed Auxiliary Birthday Party At Legion Hall

St Ed Auxiliary of Grosser Post 228 held its Legion birthday party at the Legion Hall. Legionnaires and wives played pitch. Mrs Tom Harris and Leon Rimovsky had high scores. Mrs Howard Jacobson and Vic Reed won low. Leon Rimoysk received the door prize. Entertainment was organized by Mrs M H Bystrom Ames Jasa and Mrs Arthur McKay. Dwaine Pont presented a birthday cake to Legion Commander Garry Thompson. Hostesses included Mrs Dol Seback and others. The Sequoyah tree name was noted in a related line.

Lakeview junior chosen for Nebraska Girls State representation

Connie Moeller, a Lakeview High School junior and honor roll student, was selected by the Platte Center Auxiliary to represent Lakeview at Mie 1970 Nebraska Girls State. She is active in cheer, choral groups, Future Homemakers of America, and serves as assistant librarian.

Tri County Recreation Association marked second anniversary event

About 150 people attended a St Patrick's celebration for the Tri County Recreation Association as the club marked its second anniversary. Funds from dues go to FILA loan payments of 6463 dollars yearly, with the rest supporting operating costs while the clubhouse remains self supporting.
