Whitehead sworn in as 21st District judge in Columbus

John Whitehead took the oath as the 21st District judge at a Columbus ceremony in a historic courtroom. Nebraska Supreme Court Justice C Thomas White presided with District Judges Sam Caniglia and Frank Kneifel in attendance as family members helped him don robes.

Boxed remains of Americans arrive in Hanoi for planeside ceremony

In Hanoi the House of the Reposing Soul received 12 black boxes labeled with American names. UAW president Leonard Woodcock and lawmakers G V Montgomery and Charles Yost witnessed the somber arrival as Vietnamese officials discussed delivering the remains to the U S aircraft. Montgomery pressed for a ceremony at the airport.

Food price surge drives February U.S. inflation higher

Consumer prices jumped 1 percent in February led by a 2 percent rise in food costs. Severe winter weather spurred record vegetable price gains, while fuel, gas, and natural gas also climbed. The Consumer Price Index stood at 177.1, about 6 percent higher than a year earlier, with services and nonfood items rising modestly.

Senate panel approves standard deduction plan for tax reform

The Senate Finance Committee backed a flat standard deduction of 3200 dollars for married couples and 2200 for singles aiming to simplify tax forms by April 15 1978. About two million higher income filers would face a small tax increase while most using the standard deduction would gain. Nebraska keeps counterfeit drug felony provision in place

Lincoln Nebraska lawmakers voted 20 to 15 to keep a statute making dispensing counterfeit narcotics a felony. Senator Ernest Chambers opposed, saying the law criminalizes a non criminal act. Supporters argued tighter penalties deter drug pushers and there should be no loopholes.
