United Press International reports Carter would beat Ford by five points in a week’s general election, 47 to 42, with Humphrey trailing Ford 48 to 43 and Jackson at 49 to 39. Gallup polled 1,213 adults previously interviewed in person.

Six Nebraska schools led by Columbus High share awards from the 52nd annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest. The Discoverers earned second place in the senior high newspaper division, The Echo won first in its category, and Geneva School’s The Wildcat Pride took first in overall. Columbia University noted about 1,150 entries nationwide received awards.

In Lincoln Nebraska the May 11 presidential primary will include Senators Hubert Humphrey and Ted Kennedy on the ballot a refusal to withdraw their names under state law. Oregon Secretary of State Beermann certified Kennedy and Humphrey for the Oregon ballot though both had sought withdrawal Nebraska law deems their affidavits purged if they run in another state. Nebraska must place the candidates back on the ballot even if write-ins are allowed.

Winter Storm Delivers Nebraska Snow Hit
A late winter storm dumped two to three inches of snow in eastern and central Nebraska with Chadron reporting three inches and Valentine two. A weak Texas Panhandle low triggered precipitation as a cold front moved eastward, warning motorists of hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service predicted an additional one to three inches before pattern moves out this evening.
