Missing hiker hunted in Smokies amid dwindling hope

In Gatlinburg Tennessee a forest ranger said the search for 20 year old Mark Hanson of Newport Kentucky missing since Sunday in Great Smoky Mountains National Park has bogged down with little hope of success. About 40 searchers would continue the hunt as Hanson’s pack was found along the Appalachian Trail. Hanson, Eastern Kentucky students John Chidester and Ben Fish set out on a 31 mile hike. Chidester turned back due to boot problems while Fish sought help after Hanson exhausted himself in recent snow. Fish found help but Hanson remained missing after spending five nights in the cold. Rain and mud complicate the search. milder weather and higher temperatures have washed much of the snow from the trail.
