The Labor Department reported February wholesale prices rose 1.9 percent, the largest monthly gain since 1951, driven by farm products foods and industrial raw materials. The index climbed to 126.9, up 8.2 percent from a year earlier, amid debate over Nixon Phase 3 controls and wage trends.
Secretary Earl L. Butz says Justice Department found no criminal wrongdoing by government employees or grain firms in last year’s grain sales to the Soviet Union. He notes the probe cleared officials and industry of illicit activity and cites imports totaling about 440 million bushels of wheat, 25 million tons of corn, and 35 million bushels of soybeans since July 1, valued at over 1 billion dollars.
