Fewer initial unemployment claims report lowers first-time filings
The Labor Department reported 64,000 first-time state unemployment claims for the week ended Feb 22, the lowest in three months. Weekly benefits rose to 6.0 million as of Feb 15, with regular benefits at about 5.038 million. California, Virginia, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Arizona led claims, while overall unemployment stayed near 8 percent nationally. Extended benefit claims reached 458,100 for the week ending Feb 16, up 59,600 from the prior week.
