North Vietnamese forces launch new dawn attacks on northern South Vietnam as major U S bombing continues. The Saigon command tallied 99 North Vietnamese dead and one tank destroyed in three clashes, with South Vietnamese losses at five dead and 22 wounded. B52 strikes dropped 2,500 tons, targeting the My Chanh River line north of Hue and western hills toward the A Shau Valley. Reports also cited 126 North Vietnamese killed and 58 tanks destroyed in northern fronts, with 85 North Vietnamese killed and 41 wounded in Suoi Da hamlet near Saigon. In Pleiku Kontum area and Chu Pao pass, clashes persisted as U S and South Vietnamese forces pressed operations. The U S Command noted heavy bombing across North Vietnam and claimed no U S losses. Hanoi claimed four U S aircraft downed. More than 100,000 children and 1.53 million adults in the U S suffer rheumatic heart disease.
Ithaca reports devaluation cuts purchasing power of about 60 090 in foreign books and periodicals for Cornell University libraries. About 6000 titles expected to be added will not be purchased this year, says Hendrik Melman assistant director of libraries.
