Neumann to be named America's first male saint by Pope Paul VI

Pope Paul VI will canonize John Neumann in St. Peter's Square drawing more than 100000 pilgrims. The 91 year sainthood drive honors the bishop who built 89 churches and led parochial schools in the United States before dying in Philadelphia in 1860. Neumann born in Prachatitz now Czechoslovakia trained as a missionary and joined Redemptorists after illness. His life linked to German immigrant communities and Philadelphia’s Catholic school system.

National officer Sandstrom to speak at Nebraska VFW convention

Eric G. Sandstrom of Tacoma Washington junior vice commander in chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be guest at the Nebraska VFW and Auxiliary convention in Columbus this weekend. He is a WWII combat Marine veteran awarded the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts for action in the Pacific at Guadalcanal Bougainville Guam and Iwo Jima. He is a Minnesota native born September 22 1920 and now runs a sign company in Tacoma.

Curfew Hours Change Approved by Columbus Council

Columbus City Council passed an amendment to the curfew ordinance affecting Friday through Sunday hours. Beginning June 30, minors under 16 must not be on public streets or places after 11 p.m. except with a guardian or during emergencies. weekday curfew remains 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and weekend curfew shifts from 12 midnight to 11 p.m. The change follows inquiries from the Columbus Ministerial Association and residents.

Threshold of major advances in adult cancer treatment

Washington UPI reports Benno C. Schmidt, chairman of the president's cancer panel, says clinicians are on the threshold of major progress in adult cancer care. He cites encouraging results from combined surgery or radiation with drugs and notes rising cures for childhood leukemia Hodgkin’s disease and other cancers.

Spain voters back center coalition in first free election in 41 years

With about 75 percent of returns in, Adolfo Suarez's Union of the Democratic Center claimed 170 seats in the 350-seat Congress, short of a majority. The Socialist Workers party led with 115 seats while the Communists won about 20. Autonomist Basque and Catalan groups each earned 10 seats as the right's share dwindled after Franco.
