Apollo Soyuz mission cleared for July 15 launch

Space officials report all systems go for the Apollo spacecraft launch on July 15 from Kennedy Space Center to rendezvous with the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft. Flight readiness review approved the Saturn I B rocket and support operations. countdown rehearsal set for June 25 through July 3. The crew includes Brig. Gen. Thomas Stafford Vance Brand and Donald Slayton with cosmonauts Leonov and Kubasov.

Discover Columbus committee forms at chamber meeting

The Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce launched the Discover Columbus committee at Louie's Restaurant with Melba Kuntzelman as chairwoman. The group plans conventioneer greeters guides brochures maps and guided tours of Columbus and surrounding area. A slogan contest with cash prize was organized by Tony Nielsen and Mrs Sislo. A rodeo committee led by Ralph Wayne was formed to explore a Fourth of July event.

Red Cross Bloodmobile to Visit Columbus

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will tour Columbus June 24 and 25 at Agricultural Park from 11 am to 5 pm Tuesday and 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday. The Platte County Chapter aims 194 pints daily. Donors should eat lightly beforehand, avoid fatty foods, and appointments expedite the process. Walk-ins welcome. 17 and 18 year olds may donate with parental consent.

Inmates to Receive The Longest Yard Movie Copy

Nebraska State Prison inmates may get a free copy of The Longest Yard after a prison softball game and inmate administration football mock game inspired by the Burt Reynolds film. Athletic director Howard Smith wrote to Reynolds’ agent. the spokesman promised delivery.

Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker wins international comic award

The Swedish Academy of Comic Art named Mort Walker of King Features Best International Comic Strip Creator for Beetle Bailey. The award recognizes the Telegram syndicated strip read by seven million daily across 1,200 newspapers in 25 countries and 11 languages. The prize includes a wooden Adamson statuette.

Bismark Township in Platte County’s Centry History

Platte County created Bismark Township in 1871 from three townships and named after a German settlement linked to Otto von Bismarck. It lies near Lake Babcock and Lake North, with a historic 240 acre poor farm nearby. Notables include Carl Hoge, long time Platte County Clerk, and Robert Heiden, a soldier with an Alaskan river named after him.

Fear City pamphlets barred by federal court order

Off duty police and firemen were served with a federal court injunction prohibiting pamphlet distribution labeling New York as Fear City. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association sought to vacate the order arguing a violation of free speech. PBA president Ken McFee ley Transit Police Benevolent Association leader John Maye and Uniformed Firefighter's Association chief Richard Viz zini received the injunction at Kennedy Airport. "We are police officers," Maye said. "We expect others to obey the law and we will obey them."

New police firing range ribbon cut by gunfire
