A high pressure system over northern Arkansas drives moist air into central and eastern Nebraska with light showers in spots. Skies clear at midday. highs reach upper 80s to mid 90s, south winds 10 to 20 mph gusting to 34. Overnight lows range 55 to 69. In the Middle East, cease-fire efforts in Lebanon stall as Arab nations seek truce talks and a possible peacekeeping role.

Californians voted two to one against Proposition 15, a measure to tighten safety standards for atomic power plants. Supporters led by Ralph Nader blamed a multimillion-dollar utility and oil industry campaign, while backers of the People’s Lobby vowed to seek another ballot in 1978.
