Weekend unrest left two dead and over 100 injured as youths from Latin street gangs battled police in Humboldt Park and downtown. Fire and looting spread as reinforcements arrived. a bomb damaged city buildings amid the chaos.
A high pressure system from North Dakota brought cooler air to Nebraska easing recent heat records. The National Weather Service expected warmer air to return by Tuesday as the high moved southeast. Dry, warm conditions were forecast Wednesday through Friday with thunderstorms in central and southern Nebraska moving into Kansas by midday.
The Lakeview High School second semester honor roll includes freshmen sophomores juniors and seniors with high distinctions and honor roll recipients. In Extreme New York UPI the day saw 108 degrees at Red Bluff California and Gila Bend Arizona while Gunison Colorado posted a 40 degree low. Names Carol Lindhorst Sue Menke Glenda Pleitner Sue Schumacher Cindy Sharp also appear.
Commerce Department data show total public and private debt rising to 4.4 trillion in 1976, equating about 15,400 dollars per American. Private debt climbs 10.5 percent while federal debt surges 15.6 percent to 615 billion, with state and local debt rising 6.1 percent to 226 billion.
John Mitchell and Haldeman were ordered to prison on June 22 for obstructing justice, conspiracy and perjury in the Watergate scandal. Sirica gave two weeks to settle personal affairs before reporting to U.S. marshal at 10 am. Haldeman will serve at Lampoc California camp, Mitchell may go to Allenwood Pennsylvania. Supreme Court has rejected appeals. final option by June 17 remains unlikely.
The Supreme Court 54 to ? vote struck down Louisiana’s law mandating death for killing a police officer, allowing mitigating factors. It vacated Harry Roberts’ death sentence for Officer Dennis McInerney’s 1974 New Orleans killing and sent the case back for further proceedings. The court also ruled customs officers may inspect incoming international mail with reasonable cause and addressed several other cases.
The Justice Department prepared a confidential list of illegal wiretaps and other wrongdoing by government investigative agencies and sent it to a House subcommittee. Deputy Assistant Attorney General Raymond Calamaro said the list notes whether cases are open or closed and remains confidential.
Equitable Savings and Loan Association directors approve expansion of 1269 25th Avenue facility by extending south and linking to the former bus depot. The project adds 7,067 square feet for a total of 11,480, enabling a larger lobby, night depository, updated loan processing, relocated drive up windows, and 17 off street parking. Construction starts immediately and should finish in late fall. Emiel Christensen of Columbus is architect. Johansen Construction of Columbus is general contractor.
Lincoln man John O'Conner, 16, was revived by friends after his heart and breathing stopped when he fell into a hole near Holmes Lake. Dan Matthews, a Holmes Lake Marina employee, said he apparently stepped into a hole while walking along the shore.
A Columbus girl placed runner-up in the intermediate division of the state Lions Club talent contest at Fremont Friday. Margaret Spenner, daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Spenner, sang a vocal solo with David Ferguson on guitar. She performed My Favorite Things and Shenandoah before about 500 Lions and guests.
Rod Hays, longtime The Columbus Telegram advertising director, to become advertising director for The MedAllen Monitor in McAllen Texas. Appointment effective July 15 announced by Larry Wingert and David Lyons. Hays, 26 year ad veteran, is married with three children and hails from McCook Nebraska.
