Traffic surveys scheduled across Nebraska highways this summer

Motorists across Nebraska will help state roads officials by taking brief interviews on origins, destinations and trip purposes. Selected drivers at varied points will be stopped for two to ten minutes while surveys assess traffic patterns to maximize highway investment returns. Interviews avoid recording license numbers or identifying information. Early June sites include Beatrice, Brownville, Crawford, Crele, Dawson, Falls City, Nebraska City, Plattsmouth, and Steward. Late June to early July surveys will cover Atkinson, Bussell, Chadron, Columbus, Fullerton, Schuyler, Stromsburg, Valentino, and York.

Calls for closer look at tax provisions granting preferential treatment

Washington reports Treasury figures showing tax provisions favoring royalties and specific groups cost about 41 billion in revenue last year, about two percent of annual government spending. Senator Proxmire urged Congress to examine these "tax expenditures" as they do direct spending, noting some provisions may be questionable while others are desirable. The Treasury summary cites 43.85 billion lost in fiscal 1971 from preferences, improved by the 1969 tax reform act. Major deductions include state and local taxes, mortgage interest, property taxes, oil depletion, charitable contributions, and other exposures shaping overall tax losses.
