Annual Platte Fair Set Here July 28 31
The Platte County Fair enters its 37th year as a four day weekend event at Agricultural Park in Columbus from Thursday July 28 through Sunday July 31. Exhibitors can claim premium checks Monday morning and exhibits must be removed, with a 9 a.m. sheep swine and beef sale. The H State Show spans Thursday through Saturday with multiple children and FFA events, rides by Dale s Thomas Shows and Rides, and a large Sunday finale featuring Cantari Choral Group, Toni Ingraham, and a fireworks display. Grandstand nights include Teen dance, Sweetfield Revue, and a Grand Ole Opry- Tommy Overstreet show, plus tractor and pickup pull events.

DETROIT UP I A patrolman, Thomas Pennypacker, 32, was injured when his squad car left the road while protecting an eyewitness in a gun battle with a second car in Taylor. He remains in stable condition with a back injury. The witness escaped unhurt. Authorities say about 15 shots were exchanged. The witness is crucial for prosecutions of organized crime figures in Wayne County.

PROGRAM HELPS NEEDY Good Neighbor Award presented Hugh Grosz
Hugh Grosz of Columbus received the Good Neighbor Award from the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben at the Pawnee Shrine steak feed. Nominated by the Columbus Area Chamber, Grosz organized a Food Pantry Program with Federated Church funds and space and spurred church and community support to aid about 40 families over a year and a half.
