Training urged for local fire departments after lethal freight train blaze

The Salignal Transportition Safety Award urged improved disaster training for local fire departments nationwide after a 1970 Crescent City incident where a Toledo, Peoria and Western freight train carrying liquified petroleum gas exploded. Sixty-six were injured as evacuations spared more, with a sergeant warning firemen early. five derailed cars exploded, debris flew 1,600 feet, and 25 homes and businesses were destroyed. Damages totaled about 1.7 million dollars. Jockey Edie Arcaro won the Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park four times between 1940 and 1955.
