Senate approves $9 billion Veterans Administration appropriation
The Senate approved a $9 billion VA appropriation for the current fiscal year, with $3.12 billion for medical care, surpassing Nixon’s request by $105 million. The measure now heads to a conference committee to reconcile $1.85 billion in the Senate plan with $1.77 billion in the House plan, as criticism of VA hospitals and Vietnam veteran care continues. The House Ways and Means Committee also tentatively backed loans, technical aid, and tax relief for industries and workers hurt by import impacts.
