Royal visit opens with Buckingham warmth at White House

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrived at the White House for a two day US stay joined by President Ford and Betty Ford. The ceremony featured Marine Band honors and a balcony greeting as plans for a state dinner and visits to national monuments were announced.

Cold Front Brings Showers and Warm Temperatures

A weak cold front moved into Nebraska from the west bringing showers and mostly cloudy skies. The National Weather Service warns the livestock safety index is in the danger zone in eastern Nebraska while the Panhandle outlook calls for widely scattered thunderstorms tonight and Thursday. Temperatures will reach the 90s with lows in the mid 50s to mid 60s.

Two Soviet Cosmonauts Start Space Workday on Soyuz 21

Tass reports Col Boris Volynov and Flight Engineer Lt Col Vitaly Zholobov began their first full day in space aboard Soyuz 21 after an eight hour rest. By noon Moscow time the craft had circled Earth 14 times and operated normally.

Christians and mountain men recapture Chekka in Lebanon fighting

Christian militiamen and thousands of villagers recaptured Chekka after a two day assault against Palestinian and leftist forces. The fighting killed nearly 300 across Lebanon with heavy losses around Beirut and Tal Zaatar. Foreign evacuees dwindled as Red Cross struggled to enter the refugee camp.

Examiners Stay at Armory Under County Action

Platte County supervisors approve continued use of the National Guard Armory for driver license examiners at 10 dollars a day with a 120 dollar monthly cost covered above 70 by the State Motor Vehicle department. They eye a new site after the Armory raised rates to 60 dollars daily. Progress on the Hall of Justice is reported with a December 15 target.

Court upholds favorable decision on Fort Calhoun nuclear unit

The Nebraska Supreme Court unanimously rules the Power Review Board acted properly in approving the Fort Calhoun Station Unit No. 2 project. Omaha Public Power District proves by substantial evidence it can meet customer demand by 1986. The Public Power Project argued the plant is unnecessary and costlier than coal.

Hartman Post 84 selects Cave as commander and new officers

Gil Cave installed as commander of Hartman Post 84 American Legion with Dan Casey as second vice commander Dennis Matson third vice commander Jim Gregorious finance officer and Harry Mielak service officer. New executive board members Jerry Landhamer Francis Shank and board members Leonard Kirchner Darrel Baldwin appointed. Cave previously served on the executive board in 1972 and led a 1975 76 membership drive to a high of 861 affiliated.
