Greater York Area Centennial celebration slated for July

The York Nebraska centennial events run July 11 to 18 featuring two Centennial Balls for different generations, a Father’s Day church services and inter-faith out village service at the fairgrounds, Old Fashioned Bargain Day, Governor’s Day cake cutting by Gov. Norbert Tiemann, and the Trail Dust to Stardust outdoor historical production with 326 local actors. Parades July 14 16 and 18, a billion dollar exhibit, Apollo moon rock, and space displays accompany the festivities. York Centennial Headquarters offers details.

Violence rages in Asbury Park West Side amid fires and arrests

New Jersey reports a second night of unrest in Asbury Park with more than 12 hours of violence, about 10 arrests and at least 44 injuries. Police maintain a perimeter around the West Side as 15 black community leaders demanded 20 items from Mayor Maltice and city council members including job hires, amnesty for recent arrests, and black school board representation.

Nebraska faces a dry, hot, and windy spell. Federal crop observers report extremely dry surface conditions across most areas, with many row crops curling. Dryland corn and millo are hardest hit, stressing irrigation supplies as wheat harvest runs well ahead of normal and 55 to 75 percent of crops are harvested or ripe in the east.
