The State of Nebraska orders the Columbus landfill closed and stops dumping south of the city until the site meets conditions. Bids for a new compactor were approved May 28, but it will not be ready by August 1. City officials must show cause why the closure should be lifted.

City council notes waste transfer station costs more than doubled from eight thousand five hundred to eighteen thousand fifty nine, based on a progress report by B D Construction. Contract awarded May 1 for two hundred forty two thousand dollars with December completion. Mayor and others to meet with R W Beck and Associates on Tuesday regarding water plant automation study.
Bruce Lagwerker, 19, was sentenced in the 21st Judicial Court to concurrent terms totaling up to 38 years in the Nebraska Penal and Correctional Complex after pleading guilty to two counts of arson in the second degree and robbery. Credit for 104 days already served.

The Rev. Vincent Gananan OFM returns to St Bonaventure parish to offer his first Mass in Columbus on Sunday July 5 at 9 30 am. He will receive friends and well wishers from 2 to 4 pm Sunday at the Franciscan Friary after the service.
