Mid January auto rebates lift sales but layoffs persist
Detroit reports a 41 percent rise in mid month auto sales due to price rebates by the four major automakers. Despite the uptick, thousands of laid off workers remain idle, with 176,000 on open-ended layoffs. Dealers note higher showroom traffic since Chrysler sparked the price war on Jan 13, but sustained gains hinge on late January and early February reports. Montreal police kill fugitive linked to Club Gargantua slayings
