Israeli forces land on Shadwan island in Red Sea

Israeli forces landed on the Egyptian island of Shadwan guarding the entrance to the Gulf of Suez. Military spokesmen said planes sank two Egyptian torpedo boats to clear the way, and troops overwhelmed all resistance. Casualties were at least 15 Egyptians killed, three Israelis killed and six injured. The raid followed an Israeli incursion into Jordan and involved battles with Jordanian, Saudi and guerrilla forces. The island lies between Sinai and the Egyptian mainland near Sharm el Sheikh.
