UNL explores solar energy to dry grain

The University of Nebraska Lincoln leads a study among 12 land grant universities on using solar energy to replace fossil fuels in grain drying. Nebraska engineers model and simulate solar drying, aiming to cut gas use by up to 50 percent. Drying corn and rice currently consumes about 640 million gallons of LP gas annually. Research is funded by a grant from Energy Research and Development Administration and coordinated by the USDA Agricultural Research Service. The project follows 1974 work showing solar heat could supplement grain drying.
