Plan public hearings on tax break policy changes
Washington plans public hearings on a $2.6 billion business tax break as President Nixon announces depreciation rule changes. Treasury Undersecretary Walker says regulations are complex and will cover hundreds of pages while the policy itself remains unchanged. The new policy cuts the writeoff period by about 20 percent, potentially saving business $2.6 billion this year and up to $4 billion in 1976. An associate of Ralph Nader sued, claiming the move violated the law by skipping hearings, but Walker cites existing authority to proceed without public consultation.
