The piece reviews old records and local lore about early settlers, possible namesake figures like J D Buller and W O Butler, and notes Governor Butler’s impeachment context. It highlights Witchey’s Island, historical mentions from 1867, and the theory the name honors a neighboring county rather than a failed governor.
