Drought and early snowstorm mark unusual 1970 weather year
Driest start to the year gave way to record rains by autumn. For eight months moisture was low, but September and October delivered heavy totals. A six inch early snow on October 9 surprised historians, causing road trouble but mainly tree and debris cleanup. Snow total for 1970 was 17 inches, far below the 28.7 inch norm, contributing to a dry year overall. Temperature swings were wide with January deep cold and July heat. Details compare monthly moisture, mean temps, and high lows with normals.
