Gas rate bill gains first round legislative approval
In Lincoln the legislature approved a bill to shift gas rate negotiations from municipalities to the State Oil and Gas Commission. Sponsored by Sen. Wayne Zlebarth, amended by Sen. Robert Clark, the plan would empower a three member governorially appointed commission to set reasonableness standards and require utility companies to prove rates. The measure cites past Sidney rate disputes and a Nebraska Supreme Court ruling on area schedules, arguing the commission has the expertise to negotiate reasonable rates.
