Uganda allows Americans to depart amid Amin upheaval

A Ugandan diplomat assured the United States that President Idi Amin will permit Americans to leave Uganda without harassment. About 175 U.S. citizens in Uganda were advised they could depart. U.S. interests are being handled with Germany as the diplomatic intermediary. President Carter condemned Amin’s actions and cited human rights abuses as fueling Western alarm.

Nebraska litter tax bill survives kill attempt

In Lincoln Sen Sam Cullan failed to indefinitely postpone the litter tax measure as it won secondary approval on a tight 25 20 vote The tax would be 150 per 1 million in gross sales and be administered by the Department of Environmental Control Schmit said first year collection costs would be about 90000 and aimed at distributors of litter producing products to reach the source of the problem.

Panel would create energy department to control oil prices

Budget Director Bert Lance described a plan to abolish the Federal Power Commission, Federal Energy Administration and Energy Research and Development Administration to form a new cabinet level Energy Department. Officials said the NRC would remain separate from the department.

Gunman Seizes Hostages in Syracuse Apartment Drama

In Syracuse a gunman took two residents hostage and dragged them to his apartment after kicking in a door. Police reported the gunman, George Sparks Jr. 24, fired at officers and killed a man identified as Dino, with negotiations revealing hostile attitudes toward society and talk of escape. Beverly Jones, 20, was among the hostages. The standoff began around 2 a.m. near a predominantly Black area.

First Liver Transplant Patient Delivers Healthy Baby

In San Francisco at Letterman General Hospital a 25 year old mother, Noreen Musgrave, delivered a healthy newborn, claiming she survived a Thanksgiving 1974 liver transplant that saved her life. Her husband is Army Sgt. Charles Musgrave.

Two Soviet cosmonauts back today after 18 days in space

Tass reported Gorbatko and Glazkov returning to Earth ending the 18 day mission aboard the Salyut 5 station. Weather challenges and recovery teams were deployed in the touchdown zone as paratroopers and helicopters searched inaccessible areas.

Weather woes plague many areas

Flash floods forced partial evacuations in two western Pennsylvania towns and flood watches were issued for parts of West Virginia Pennsylvania and Ohio. Light Snow Possible Across Nebraska This Weekend

Nebraska forecasts show mostly cloudy skies with a chance of scattered light snow in the southwest this afternoon and across the southern state tonight. No significant weather systems are noted. Chance of rain or snow appears for Sunday and next Tuesday. Morning temperatures ranged from 21 in Scottsbluff to 4 in Grand Island with highs about 54 in Beatrice and 36 in Valentine. Afternoon highs in the 40s and tonight’s lows in the 20s.
