Duncan parents and the Columbus Board reviewed an 11 000 square foot facility and heard concerns about room sizes wind damage and maintenance. Enrollment projections rise from 67 to the 80s over five years while curriculum and staffing options for 1977 78 are debated.
Curtis announced the national Water Resources Council will be funded in fiscal 1978 at 13.8 million dollars, restoring the prior level after efforts since December. He noted most council programs will continue at 1977 funding levels despite some grant reductions to state planning agencies.
Schuyler Nebraska becomes the fourth city to sign a Capacity Purchase Agreement with NPPD to buy all electric needs from Loup Power District. NPPD will lease Schuyler's generating facility as a reserve source for emergencies and peak demand.
The National Weather Service reports last month was the coldest January in at least 177 years across the eastern two thirds of the U S The agency forecasts more below normal temperatures for the next 30 days with a potential winter record if February and March stay cold Cincinnati averaged 12 degrees 20 below normal and 4 degrees colder than the 1918 January record Northeastern regions are expected to stay below normal for precipitation while the Gulf and South Atlantic coasts may see above normal rainfall.
The 30 day Nebraska outlook from the National Weather Service indicates precipitation from .75 inch in northwest Nebraska to 1.5 inches in the southeast. Temperatures should stay near seasonal normals with highs from the mid 30s to low 40s and overnight lows rising from the teens to the mid 20s by mid March.
Eastern Nebraska saw mostly clear skies and cool air while western Nebraska enjoyed partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures. A stationary front near the Sandhills kept eastern counties cool with arctic air mixing with a milder Pacific air mass from the Rockies. Light snowfall occurred in the southwest with overnight accumulations up to an inch in the Sandhills.
The Platte flood plains map was reviewed by the Platte County Board with a proposed compromise including the Loup and Shell Creek. A public hearing is set for March 15 on Rural Road Improvement District 2. The board approved buying a self powered broom for the highway department at 12200 dollars, higher than the low bid but meeting specs and without objectionable features.
In Lincoln, a bid by Ralston Senator Gerald Koch to revive a bill altering how State Parole Board members are selected failed 26 to 21. The measure would set qualifications and salaries and create a nomination commission with governor approval.
The historic ballot box from School District 46 in Sherman Township was donated to the Platte County Historical Society this morning. County Supervisor Reinhold Ernst handed the box to Jerry Kneifel as Election Commissioner Dorothy Kyriss watched, noting its 1920s era label Women's Ballots Sherman Two.
A public hearing on the one and six year street improvement plans is scheduled to open the Columbus City Council meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall. The session continues with a hearing for April 27 at 4 p.m. and discussions with the Nebraska Department of Labor for funds.
